Required textbook: Merlonghi, Merlonghi, Tursi and O’Connor. Oggi in Italia (with Oggi in Italia: Workbook / Lab Manual / Video Manual). Boston-New York: Houghton and Mifflin, 2002 (7th edition). [We will cover chapters 1-6.]

10% Homework assignments

10% Journal (due Dec. 8)

30% Quizzes (Sept. 15, 22, 29; Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27; Nov. 3, 10, 17)

40% Final exam (Dec. 15, at 2:00; location TBA)

Attendance/Class participation: When studying a foreign language, attendance and class participation are an absolutely vital part of the class. Missing classes without due cause will not be tolerated. You can skip one class for personal reasons without having to provide an explanation. After that, if you miss a class without valid reason, you will lose points. Late arrivals or early departures, especially if chronic, will count as partial absences.

Homework: Homework will be assigned after every lecture. Since new vocabulary and new material are introduced every time the class meets, it is important to practice Italian regularly, and to return the assignments in a timely fashion.

Journal: On the last day of this class, students must hand in the final drafts of their journals, which should include at least 2 entries, in Italian or in English, for every week of the semester (with the exception of first and last week, and the week of Thanksgiving). On this journal you can write in Italian about your life, books you read or movies you see, songs you like, etc., or you can write in English about your progress and about the problems that you may encounter learning the Italian language. During the semester you can show me your journal on a regular basis, and I will give you suggestions for improvement.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be 2-3 pages long. Time allowed for the completion of each quiz will be 20’-30’. Only the 8 highest grades will be counted. No make-up quizzes will be offered.

Final exam: The final exam will be cumulative. It will be 8-10 pages long.

Class website: You can access material and information online at this address: http://www.campo7.com/itl111. There you will find a copy of this syllabus, weekly assignments, readings, announcements of cancellations or delays.

Disability Support Service: If you have a physical, psychiatric/emotional, medical or learning disability that may impact on your ability to carry out assigned course work, I would urge that you contact the staff in the Disabled Student Services office (DSS), rm. 133 Humanities, 632-6748/TDD. DSS will review your concerns and determine, with you, what accommodations are necessary and appropriate. All information and documentation of disability is confidential.

Academic Honesty: All students are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic honesty. There will be no excuses accepted for plagiarism, cheating, or any other act (including the use of automatic translators) which suggests that you have not fulfilled your academic responsibilities in this course. All suspected violations of the Academic integrity code will be vigorously pursued. For further details please refer to the Academic Judiciary Committee website (http://naples.cc.sunysb.edu/CAS/ajc.nsf).

University Closings: Campus closings (due to weather or other emergencies) will be announced on local radio and TV stations: e.g., WUSB, 90.1 FM, or call at (631) 632-6820; WUSB, 1630 AM, or call at (631) 632-6501; WBLI, 106 FM; WALK, 97.5 FM or 1370 AM; News 12 Long Island. Emergency reports will also be posted on the Stony Brook main website (http://www.sunysb.edu).

Italy on the Internet

The best thing to do for anyone who studies a foreign language, next to visiting the country where that language is used, is to surf the Internet searching for Web sites offering references to contemporary events in the language of the day. The following is a short catalog of interesting and useful Italian Web sites with texts, audio or video.

Telecom Italia, the largest Internet service provider in Italy

Newspapers and magazines with wide circulation, published by Rizzoli-Corriere della sera

La Repubblica, one of the two newspapers with the largest number of readers in Italy

The Web site of the Italian public TV, RAI, with daily radio and TV newscasts, portals for most of their current programs, large archives, and much more

The sports section of RAI (http://www.raisport.rai.it/), which also broadcasts its programs on the Internet (low/high resolution)

Produced with the assistance of RAI, this site offers videos taken with a digital camera inside a bar in Bensonhurst, where most customers are Italians or Italian Americans
